“The Express”, luggage labels booklet, beginning of the 20th century
Owner: Antarctic Heritage TrustAntarctic Heritage Trust, New-Zealand.
This booklet, composed of twenty detachable printed luggage labels, comes from the collection of c.18,000 artefacts at Terra Nova Hut, the expedition base built by Captain Robert Falcon Scott and party during his 1910-1913 expedition to Antarctica. The paper is heavily damaged by the environmental conditions at the hut (freeze-thaw, high humidity, exposure to water, and salt damage), very dirty, deformed and chemically unstable. The main objective was to be able to separate the pages which were stuck together, and then repair and stabilize the paper through washing, de-acidifcation and mending of physical damage. The booklet was then re-formed into its original layout.
